In
1998 the City of Oregon City purchased 13.71 acres
from Oregon City School District using Park SDC
funds for the future develop of a park.
An additional 5 acres were purchased from a private
party in 2001. The property was annexed
into the city as separate pieces in 2000 and 2002
and then combined to into what is now the Wesley
Lynn Park property. The property is located
at 12901 Frontier Parkway. Frontier Parkway
was recently connected to Jessie Avenue.
The
City held a park naming contest during the spring
and summer of 2002 and selected the name Wesley
Lynn from the approximately 40 names suggested.
Wesley Lynn Park is named for a local Oregon City
resident who spent his entire life living on one
of the parcels purchased for the park.
In
the 1999 Park and Recreation Master Plan, this area
of the City was identified as park deficient and
this property received a high priority rank for
development. During 2000, the Parks and Recreation
Advisory Committee identified this property as a
high priority for development, not only because
of its location but because its size would allow
for the development of much needed sports fields.
In
early 2001 the City began working with Lango·Hansen,
Landscape Architects through a series of public
forums to develop a master plan for Wesley Lynn
Park. The Planning Commission and the City
Commission formally adopted this plan in March 2002
and the City is currently developing final construction
and bid documents to begin Phase I construction.
Based
on the approved master plan, phase I construction
began in late summer 2004. This project has
been funded by a Federal Land and Water Conservation
Grant with matching funds from Park System Development
Charges from new development. Phase I construction
of the park includes development of two baseball/
softball fields, two soccer fields, a large playground,
walking paths throughout the park, picnic areas,
parking lot, and completion of the Frontier Parkway
street connection along the frontage of the park
to Jessie Avenue.
This
phase of construction is nearly complete, with
the final touches being done this fall/ winter.
The park will "officially" open on
July 26, 2006, with a grand opening celebration
at 7PM, and food and fun from 6-8PM. Later phases
of the park development anticipate the addition
of a restroom and concession building, a covered
picnic shelter, lighting of one of the ballfields,
and an additional pathway. The City hopes to
have funding in place in the next 2-3 years to
develop these amenities and complete the park.
